Significant increases in positive cases of the HMPV virus have been observed over the past month in several countries, with the highest concentration of patients in China. Cases have also appeared in Greece, with two patients confirmed positive for the virus in the past week.
The HMPV virus causes upper respiratory tract infections, similar to the common cold, and lower respiratory tract infections, such as pneumonia, worsening pre-existing conditions (asthma exacerbations, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, etc.).
Those at risk of severe illness and hospitalization include premature infants, immunocompromised patients, and adults over 65 years old. Numerous outbreaks of the HMPV virus have been reported in childcare and eldercare facilities, resulting in several deaths.
The Hellenic National Public Health Organization (EODY) remains on alert for monitoring and managing the seasonal surge of respiratory infections.
It also reminds the public of the importance of following basic preventive measures and hygiene practices to prevent the spread of respiratory infections:
-
In the presence of respiratory infection symptoms, mask use is recommended.
-
In the presence of respiratory infection symptoms, it is recommended to avoid contact with vulnerable groups such as the elderly, people with chronic conditions, and immunocompromised individuals.
-
Frequent handwashing and avoiding touching the face are recommended.
